Woolly Plant Inspiration: Dracaena

May 17, 2013

Dracaena (Dracaena species)

Sun:  This will vary between your varieties, but generally they will require a moderate to bright indirect light. They can be grown in a lower light situation, but the leaves will be a little thinner and less healthy.

Zone:  Room temperature (somewhere between 60-70 degrees) is perfect for these plants. At night these plants can tolerate temps down to about 50 degrees.

Soil:   Any indoor potting mix will do well for this sturdy guy! We usually suggest an organic mix.

Water:   Dracaena’s like to be watered or kept moist; however they do not like soggy soils. If you check the soil with your finger, press into soil to your second knuckle, only water if it is dry. Some Dracaena’s are also fluoride sensitive, so with those you may want to use distilled or non-fluoridated water.

Culture:   Easy to care for plants (especially indoors), and come in many varieties. The houseplant always exhibits an upright habit, no matter which cultivar you have.

Tip:   The stems (known as canes), can be pruned to keep that plant shapely and in control. Also, if your plant looks dusty- wipe off its leaves!

Category:  Thriller – Used as focal points and to create a dynamic visual composition.

&

Filler – To fill in and cover the Pockets between the other plants.
