Woolly Plant Inspirations | Agave

Jul 12, 2013

Agave (Agave ssp.)

Sun: Full grown Agave’s can handle the full sun. Young Agave’s may need a little shade or filtered sunlight. If they are going to be in full sun- give them water!

Zone: Agaves like it hot! They do well in zones 5-10, just be sure to select the right plant for your zone- not all Agave’s can live in zone 5.

Soil: Agaves like well-drained soil. When planting in planters or pockets a mixture of equal parts of potting soil, native, soil and pumice should be used.

Water: In the warm or hot months of summer Agave’s really benefit from a lot of water. Since they are succulent and native to the desert they can go some time without water. However, a watered Agave is a happy Agave!

Habitat: They are actually related to hostas not cactus! They are a succulent perennial with fleshy, thick leaves.

Tip: Perfect for planters and pockets because Agave’s need aeration to the roots and they can be grown in any size container because of their shallow roots and tolerance of over-crowding.

Category: Thriller. Used as focal points and to create a dynamic visual composition.
