The Sprout Academy
The Sprout Academy is a school-year long educational preschool program at Southwest Community Center. Their teaching philosophy is Children Learn Through Play, infused with hands-on lessons of what it means to be green and how they can each do their part. The students fully fund raised their Woolly School Garden last year and began planting in their school garden in the spring. Their garden is looking so wonderful! The school garden teaches children first hand about organic gardening of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Look at those thriving chives!
By being role-models & leading by example, Sprout instructors teach students the importance of reducing, reusing, repurposing & recycling as well as simple concepts of sustainability. Students cumulatively build on the lessons they have learned throughout the year and are well-prepared for their next adventure whether it be moving up to the 3′s class, going into Pre-K, or heading off to Kindergarten! The Sprout Academy is part of Portland Parks and Recreation, which resides in beautiful Gabriel Park. Sprout is a growing program focused on the learning of eco-minded and sustainable practices such as gardening and enjoying nature-play activities in the park. In Spring of 2010, the preschool passed a 30-point checklist to become certified Eco-Healthy by the Oregon Environmental Council.
