Plant Inspiration | Ornamental Cabbage
Ornamental Cabbage (Brassica oleracea*)
Sun: Full sun works best for these cool season crops.
Zone: Any zone without a lot of heat! These plants do best and look their best when they are in cooler temps. They have been known to survive freezing temperature as low as 5 degrees F.
Soil: A well-drained soil that is organic and fertile: generally a slightly alkaline soil is preferred.
Water: Keep the plants watered well, but not sitting in water while they are getting established.
Habitat: These plants produce colorful rosettes or frilled leaves in many shades of red, green, purple, and white. These are the perfect addition to any garden to add fall interest. Ornamental cabbage is used for its showy and colorful leaves. Feel free to terminate flowers as they are not showy and deprive the leaves of water and nutrients.
Tip: The best time to plant these are now (early fall)! We suggest starting them from a transplant since seeds need over 2 months of cold. If growing from seed, do not cover them! The seeds need light to germinate.
