Woolly’s Weekend Plant Inspiration: Plants That Woolly Love Pockets

Tulips (Tulipa species)

Sun: They need some sun! They can take full sun or partial sun.

Zone: Tulips can be grown through zones 3-8, do best in areas with dry summers and cold winters.

Soil: Tulips NEED well-drained and airy soil. Wet soil promotes fungus and disease, and can rot the bulbs. Woolly Pockets help with aeration, which keeps the bulbs from suffocating.

Water: Be sure to water through dry spells in the fall (this is when their roots are growing), otherwise do not water. When tulips are in growth be sure to water moderately.

Culture: They are one of the easiest flowers to grow successfully. They come in so many colors and varieties- I don’t even know where to start! Interesting fact: the color variation of tulips is caused by a virus- no worries to humans though. Suggestion: Google Tulip mania….

Tip: Plant your tulip bulbs in the fall for bright spring color. After they flower and you remove the heads, allow them to yellow for 6 weeks and then cut them back, and dig the bulbs up from the pockets. Keep bulbs in warm dry place until next fall, and plant again (you should have babies to plant as well). During the spring, plant your favorite annual for the summer!
